Ultimately, Goldstein talked to Ford and convinced him to take the role. Goldstein still doesn’t understand what he did to convince him, but he was still very happy. He has the awkward, idiotically confident energy needed for this role. And Jessica is perfect. Her humor is perfect for the dialogue. It’s a new form of situational comedy. No real jokes, just engaging personalities with a bit of quirkiness and family circumstances that are a little off the beaten path but still relatable. Sure, Jimmy’s behavior as a therapist is completely absurd. You’d lose your license immediately. Just impossible. But in drama, we allow metaphorical situations. And in this scenario, we feel a strong intentionality in the decisions. We have to give the writers the benefit of the doubt and try to get the message across. For me, it’s easy and fun. Apparently, other reviewers had issues.
