The film follows a story of love, friendship, grief, and healing, about a writer who adopts a Great Dane that belonged to a late friend and mentor. While many authors disliked the film adaptation of her book, Sigrid Nunez has stated that she is pleased with the way her book has been presented in this film adaptation.. Screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 11, 2024 (First viewing) Format: Regular Theater The story doesn’t know where it’s going, so it often keeps going and feels like it’s never going to end, and here comes the watchman. The part that feels long and heavy in its running time isn’t long, but the slow and sometimes boring rhythm of the story makes it seem that way. The best part of the film is definitely for the dog. The way it’s trained to display these emotions and use its body language to say something is very impressive. I didn’t really like the way the story approached Bill Murray’s character. To me, the movie felt more like a story between a dog and a grieving person, not about a writer who commits suicide and leaves behind a dog. It felt very confusing in this aspect and could easily have gone into more depth on the subject or shown flashbacks that supported Bill Murray’s character. Other than that, overall, a cute and warm movie to watch, nothing special!
